My late father, Floyd V. Amoresano, was a truly extraordinary New Jersey business attorney and trial lawyer whose professional capabilities, dedication and reputation often prompted other attorneys to honor him as a "lawyer's lawyer", and inspired me, in turn, to try following in his formidable footsteps. Unfortunately, cancer stole him from us when he was only 62, while I was still completing college at Fordham University in New York, and before he could share my joy over having been accepted to study the Law at Seton Hall University, the proud alma mater to so many of our fine lawyers and jurists here in New Jersey. Today, nearly 30 years since his passing, it is not for me to say whether I possess even a portion of my father's professional qualities. It is only for me to say, with great pride and deep humility, that I possess his good name, and am still moved, by the memory of him, to keep trying. After studying at Seton Hall, I was afforded the additional honor of serving a full year internship as legal assistant to the Honorable Peter Ciolino, one of the most talented and respected Superior Court Judges in the great history of New Jersey's now internationally renowned system of justice. As such, I was privileged to enjoy the invaluable experience of witnessing and assisting one of New Jersey 's finest jurists in action as His Honor presided over a wide variety of trials, hearings, applications and conferences with one objective always in mind: the fair and impartial administration of justice for every client and counselor who appeared in his courtroom. In the process, Judge Ciolino tried to teach me, by the priceless power of his good example, that the search for justice requires much more than merely grasping the law and the facts. It requires a real grasp of people, and their very real problems, of patience, and above all, compassion. After 22 years, these are lessons I'm still learning today, which is one of the reasons why we call our profession "the practice" of law. My good fortune did not end with that internship, for I spent the next seven years serving as an associate to the incomparable Jerome A. Vogel, a New Jersey trial lawyer and business attorney so feared by other lawyers, respected by Judges, and admired by jurors that his mere presence in "the pit" of a courtroom was palpable to everyone who dared draw near. Lending vital contrast to the lessons of Judge Ciolino, Jerry taught me, from the perspective of a zealous advocate, that the client's best interests always come first, that the law is no substitute for frank and frequent communication with that client, and that thorough preparation is the hallmark of success, particularly when dealing with complex business disputes. Looking back, I know now that Jerry's "presence" came from complete confidence, his confidence from preparation, and his preparation from a work ethic driven by the sheer desire to do his clients justice. Soon after growing out from under Jerry's wing, the New Jersey Supreme Court saw fit to formally Certify me as a Civil Trial Attorney, a designation held by less than three (3%) percent of all lawyers presently licensed to practice in this State, and one which I've had the honor and privilege of holding for the last fourteen (14) years running. So I went to work in that capacity as the senior civil trial associate for a firm that handled a high volume of serious personal injury cases, including medical malpractice, auto accidents, burn injury cases and wrongful death actions. During my four (4) year tenure there, I was responsible for the successful management and resolution of a rolling inventory of 100 or more cases per year, earning "Best Producer" and "Top Grossing Associate" awards from my employers in the process. But despite my success in and out of the courtroom, I gradually became dissatisfied with my ability to deliver a consistently high level of quality and care to each and every client. You see, the more volume that a lawyer has to handle, the more difficult it can become to avoid having clients and their concerns get filtered or lost in a maze of case screeners, secretaries, paralegals and associates. So I started my own practice in order to sharpen my focus on fewer clients, give them my undivided attention, and try to do their cases justice. I've been on my own for nearly (10) years now, and can honestly say that I wouldn't want to have it any other way. Carrying a small inventory of less than thirty (30) cases at any given time, I've been able to keep in close personal touch with each of my clients, care for their concerns, and help to deliver them a fair measure of justice in the process.
