HISTORY. In 1857 David Howard Hitchcock opened a small practice in Hilo, Hawaii, starting what was to later become known as the "CARLSMITH" firm. In 1990 a merger with one of California's most respected law firms, Ball, Hunt, Hart, Brown and Baerwitz, added significant strength and depth to the firm.
