Books In Sync Recognizes Fiction Author Sylvia Dickey Smith For A Second Year

Sylvia Dickey Smith Is A Women’s Fiction Author, With Subgenres In Historical And Mystery.

Sylvia Dickey Smith was born in Orange, Texas, and grew up in a colorful Scots-Irish family living in the midst of a Cajun culture. When 34, her curiosity about the world took on a whole new dimension when she moved to the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad & Tobago. Awed by the differences in customs and cultures, particularly as they related to West Indian women, set her on a journey of study and self-discovery.

Back in the U.S. at 40, she started college and didn’t stop until she achieved a B.A. in sociology with a concentration in women’s studies and a master’s in counseling.

Featuring: A War of Her Own by Sylvia Dickey Smith

A WAR OF HER OWN set Sylvia on a new course. With it, she tapped into her true passion, and that is to write stories that not only entertain and enrich the life of women, but stories that help them find their voice. An advocate for women, her writing features those who recreate themselves into the people they want to be; strong women who take charge of their lives and get things done. (If you've met Sidra Smart or Bea Meade, you know what I mean.)

The stories dwell on the wondrous twists and turns of human behavior rooted in her background as a counselor before she became a novelist. The tales are fun, sassy, and (according to her fans) darn good reads. She hopes readers like these kinds of books, too! She looks forward to adding others as a fan.

A War of Her Own is not a mystery, really, although there are mysterious elements in it. What inspired her to write it was the setting, WWII, and the fabulous history of the area where it takes place, which is Orange, Texas, the same setting of the mystery series. WWII put that small town on the map with its massive shipbuilding operations. Then add to that, her family stories from the time period that grew in her imagination over the decades.

“Never underestimate the resilient power of the human spirit.”

In A War of Her Own, a forthcoming novel from a Midwestern indie press, Austin–area author Sylvia Dickey Smith spins a captivating tale of Bea Meade, lady riveter, and the challenges she faces on the home front working on the Texas/Louisiana border in a booming shipyard. The historical novel is set in the summer of 1943 in Orange, Texas, a sleepy little town overrun with tens of thousands of new workers. With jobs galore at the wartime shipyards, the workers are rich with cash, eager for excitement, and looking for a good time.

In the midst of this, Bea Meade, mother of an infant son, finds her life shattered when her philandering husband announces he is leaving her for another woman. To make ends meet, Bea takes a job at one of the shipyards as a riveter.

Life is good for ’most everyone in Orange—except Bea, who has to fight her battles against a no-good husband, the prejudice facing women in the workplace, and the shameful family secrets that keeps her awake at night.

A War of Her Own offers a story of wartime passions on the home front as Bea seeks to discover who she really is.
