Barbarossa
Dubbed 'Operation Barbarossa' by Adolf Hitler, the German invasion of the Soviet Union was named for Friedrich Barbarossa, the medieval Holy Roman Emperor who led a crusade to capture Jerusalem.
The Germans deployed fully 75 percent of their existing military forces in 1941 to the operation, including 148 divisions totaling over three million men
