   The DBX 160VU is a studio classic. If you walk into any professional studio you will more than likely see 1, 2 or more of these gems. They have a very versatile compression that has a lot of vibe and punch. The attack and release controls are all automatic, therefore making this a simple compressor to set up. It sounds fantastic for hip-hop and other percussive material. Also its a legend for bass and vocals. No longer made the only way to get your hands on one is to buy a used original. Like any vintage piece of equipment the originals need special up keep and maintenance. But now you can create your own.

   Some History on the Design:

The original DBX 160vu used the first ever VCA (the element that does the actual gain reduction) it was a monumental invention, it changed the way people would compress audio material forever after. The VCA was the 200 series in a big silver can. While these VCAs do not sound bad they are very hard to replicate and require matching transistors (hard and time consuming). This circuit board has Three DIY solutions. There is the option to create your own genuine discrete 200 series VCA right on the circuit board( if you dare...). Also if you have an original 200 series VCA can laying around you could just solder that in. Or the easiest (and arguably the best sounding) way is to use the modern THAT 2180 VCA replacement chip. These chips are sonically very transparent and when coupled with the original DBX 160vu side-chain circuity make a unit that has the same wonderful vibe of the original but without all the unwanted (read: not the "good" kind ) distortion.
