Baker, Garber, Duffy & Pedersen was founded by Nathan Baker in 1926. His first office was opened in Hoboken, New Jersey so as to be near the Hudson River piers that became the center of commerce for the Eastern seaboard. As trade expanded on both sides of the Hudson, he opened offices along the waterfront in Newark, New Jersey and Brooklyn, New York. At the outset, Mr. Baker represented the immigrant families who worked as longshoremen, seamen and industrial workers in New Jersey and New York. In later years, he provided legal counsel to the first-generation sons and daughters who continued to live in the great urban centers or moved to the suburbs to raise their families. Mr. Baker was a nationally renowned expert in admiralty law and a leading advocate for the rights of seamen and longshoremen. In New Jersey, he was recognized for his skill in trial advocacy and participated in many important court cases that expanded the legal rights of accident victims, such as Henningsen (products liability), Gluckoff (wrongful death), Ellis (proximate cause), O'Brien (comparative negligence) and Snyder (premises liability). In 1982, Yale Law School established the Nathan Baker Professorship of Law to support the teaching of trial advocacy and evidence. In 2000, Rutgers School of Law-Newark dedicated the Baker Trial Courtroom in honor of his distinguished legal career. Gerald H. Baker graduated from Yale Law School in 1967 and has been a member of the firm for over 30 years. He succeeded his father as managing partner in 1982 and has continued the family legacy in trial advocacy. Mr. Baker specializes in personal injury litigation and is certified as a civil trial lawyer by the New Jersey Supreme Court. He is a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and has handled many major personal injury and wrongful death cases involving automobiles, aviation, admiralty, medical malpractice, premises, railroads and products liability. (See Verdicts). He is experienced in aviation accidents and represents the families of passengers on Korean Airlines flight 007, TWA 800 and Egyptair 990. Mr. Baker is a well-known lecturer and author for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA-NJ), the New Jersey State Bar Association and the New Jersey Law Journal on many diverse topics including trial practice, automobile insurance, arbitration and premises liability. He has testified on many occasions before the New Jersey Legislature and argued many appeals as amicus curiae before the New Jersey Supreme Court as a representative of either ATLA-NJ or the New Jersey State Bar Association. Jorden N. Pedersen graduated from Rutgers University in 1972 and Valparaiso University School of Law in 1975. He has been a member of the firm for over 25 years and a partner since 1986. He specializes in maritime personal injury litigation, longshore and harborworkers compensation claims (LHWCA), railroad accidents (FELA) and products liability. Mr. Pedersen has been a member of the Board of Governors of ATLA-NJ since 1984 and was the President in 1999-2000. Bennett A. Robbins graduated from Rutgers University in 1980 and Cardozo School of Law in 1983. He has been a member of the firm for over 15 years and a partner since 1991. He specializes in personal injury litigation including automobiles, premises, construction, workers' compensation and social security disability. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Hudson County Bar Association and has served as a barrister for the Hudson County Inns of Court. In addition, he serves as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. Walter J. Curtis graduated from Seton Hall University in 1978 and Seton Hall Law School in 1981. He has been a member of the firm for 15 years and a partner since 1991. He specializes in personal injury litigation including automobiles, premises, construction, workers' compensation and social security disability. In addition, he handles immigration petitions before the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Mr. Curtis is a member of the Board of Governors of ATLA-NJ and serves as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. The law firm of Baker, Garber, Duffy & Pedersen has maintained offices in Hoboken, Newark and Brooklyn for over 75 years. We continue to specialize in personal injury litigation and we are recognized as leading advocates for the legal rights of accident victims. We represent only those persons who are injured in accidents (plaintiffs). We never represent insurance companies and we never defend those persons who are sued (defendants). As a result of our experience and reputation, we continue to meet new clients on a daily basis -- many of whom have been referred by former clients who were satisfied with our legal services. In addition, many clients are referred by other attorneys who consider us to be "the lawyers' lawyer" and who require our expertise in personal injury litigation. As we look to the future, we will remain deeply committed to the preservation of the American system of civil justice and the constitutional right to trial by jury. We will promote the development of tort law and the protection of the legal rights of innocent people who are injured in accidents. We will continue to maintain our offices in New Jersey and New York and to provide the best legal representation for our clients. WELCOME TO THE NEW MILLENNIUM. WELCOME TO BAKER, GARBER, DUFFY & PEDERSEN
