For nearly 20 years, Steve Terrell has lived with family in Decatur Township on the southwest side of Indianapolis. After practicing for over 25 years with large and small firms in downtown Indianapolis, he has opened his own law office in Ameriplex Business Park in Decatur Township. While he will continue his statewide litigation practice, Steve will operate a community law office to provide legal services to the people and small businesses in the rapidly growing area of Decatur Township, Camby and Mooresville. Admitted to practice law in 1980, Steve has over 25 years experience in the practice of law. His practice has emphasized the area of trials and appeals in both state and federal courts. But he has broad experience representing individuals and small businesses in a wide range of legal areas, including wills, starting businesses, contracts, and real estate. He is also one of the few Indiana lawyers practicing in the areas of civil rights and defamation litigation. Active in the Indiana State Bar Association, Steve was recipient of the ISBA's 2002 Presidential Award. He is the co-founder and chair of the Indiana State Bar Association’s annual Solo & Small Firm Conference. Now in its fifth year, this conference has grown into one of the ISBA’s most successful events. He also serves as co-chair of the ISBA's Law Practice Management Committee, and is a member of the ISBA's Casemake Study Committee. He served as editor of the GP Reporter Newsletter for five years, and was an officer in the ISBA's Solo & Small Firm Section in 2002-2003. Steve is a frequent speaker to other lawyers at continuing legal education seminars and conference. His topics have included federal litigation practice, trial presentation technology, use of technology in the practice of law, lawyer ethics, property tax appeals, housing discrimination and landlord risk management. He writes regularly for various bar journals, including his regular "The Basics" series, published in Res Gestae, the magazine of the Indiana State Bar Association. A native of Muncie, Steve received his B.A. Degree in political science and journalism, magna cum laude, from Ball State University in 1974. Before attending law school, he worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers and magazines. He received his law degree, summa cum laude, from Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis in 1980, where he was a member of the Board of Editors of the Indiana Law Review. He served as law clerk for Chief Judge Paul H. Buchanan, Jr. on the Indiana Court of Appeals (1977-1980). He was with the firm of Ice Miller Donadio & Ryan from 1980-1993, where he was a partner in the litigation section. He practiced with the firm of Landman & Beatty from 1994 through 2005, when he left to open his own office in Decatur Township. He has an A-V (highest) rating from Martindale-Hubble lawyer ratings. Steve is married to the former Lisa Green, Decactur High School Class of 1980. She is a computer technology trainer for one of the largest law firms in Indianapolis. They have two children, Alex and Emily, who attend Decatur Central High School. Steve has a daughter, April, from a prior marriage. She is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College, and now works at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. Steve and Lisa have been active in Decatur Township community activites. Both have served in positions at the West Newton United Methodist Church, and both have been active in scouting. They are both active in the Decatur Central High School Band Boosters. Steve served as corporate fund raising chair for the band's 2005 trip to the Fiesta Bowl Band Competition and Parade in Phoenix Arizona. Steve's "Where There's A Will" project provided Decatur area residents the opportunity to have a will and living will completed in exchange for donations to the band, raising nearly $3,000 for the trip. Steve is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, Indiana Supreme Court, 7th and 10th Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal, United States District Courts for the Southern and Northern Districts of Indiana, and all Indiana trial courts.
