Karen Andrews opened a private law practice in 2005 after serving as Hancock County's State's Attorney from 1996 to 2004. She practices in all areas of law but concentrates on criminal law cases, family law, and estate planning. While State's Attorney, she successfully tried two successful homicide cases (one a capital case) as well as many DUI and Driving While Revoked cases. Before serving as State's Attorney, she was an associate in the law firm of Capps, Ancelet, Stoverink, & Clark from 1993 to 1996. Born and raised in Hancock County (Carthage), Karen was graduated from Carthage High School in 1966, received a B.A. in English from Iowa Weskyan College hi 1970, a M.S. in English from Western Illinois University in 1972, and taught English in local schools for 20 years. She received her law degree in 1993 from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she served on the Law Journal, as well as being published in it, and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1993. Karen has been active in community and church activities in the Carthage area for over 30 years, most recently as Chairman for the Relay for Life sponsored by the American (Hancock County chapter) Cancer Society in 2005. She has served and held offices in organizations such as the Hearts of Hancock Humane Society, Friends of the Arts, Emergency Planning Committee, and others. She is also a member of the Hancock County Bar Association. She is a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Carthage, where she has been organist since 1970. Widowed in 2000, Karen has one daughter, Shannon, and one grandson, Damian. Karen enjoys time with her grandson and particularly enjoys taking him fishing with her.
