How Does Your Link Building Strategy Compare?

Undoubtedly, having a link building strategy is by far the most important aspect of website promotion. The mere act of having a website already necessitates establishing linkages. Without links, your site will not find a significant audience on the Web. You need to have quality inbound links in order to expand your website's reach or scope of influence. How does your link building strategy compare to other link building techniques? For that matter, do you even have a link building strategy to begin with?

There are many ways to build links that are intended to draw a good-sized following for your website. Note however, that not all link building activities will put your website in good standing especially among search engines. In some cases, however, getting a high search engine rank matters little for a website that simply needs a high indiscriminate traffic.

Thus, there are advantages and disadvantages to every link building strategy. Here, we will focus on three common link building methods namely, article submissions, participation at social sites and link exchanges. We will then compare these side by side against each other according to their benefits and drawbacks.

Article Submission

This will probably yield the best quality links for your website. Syndicating your write-ups to various article sites not only attracts inbound links for your site but also adds some degree of prestige as you are establishing yourself as an authority or credible resource for a significant audience. This generally yields long term results. For as long as your article is seen as valuable information, you will receive a good amount of traffic to your website from that article for a long period of time.

The primary drawback of article submission is the amount of effort that must be done to perform a content-based link building campaign. Good quality writing is a must. You need to track the performance of each article. You have to build relationships online and offline with many article site owners, bloggers and at industry portals to maximize your efforts. Nevertheless, the rewards of link building through article submission will eventually outweigh the perceived difficulty of the process.

Social Sites

Community sites like MySpace or Facebook are the fad these days. These website communities attract hundreds of thousands, if not millions of members everyday. Building your links through social sites opens up your website to a veritable mega-marketplace of people online. You will definitely find an audience at online communities through sheer number alone.

The disadvantage of social oriented sites is the lack of focus. Unlike article submission that needs to cater to particular niches, social sites tend to be a hodge podge of all things trendy that your links will hardly stand out against the backdrop of an overflow of information, which typically characterizes such social sites.

Link Exchanges

This is a fairly common strategy and the easiest, most accessible and fastest way of building links to your site. Take caution though. Most search engines do not approve of link exchanges and will probably reduce your site's authority or ranking. In this sense, link exchanges may do more damage for your site than good.

To emphasize, this is not an exhaustive review of link building methodologies. This is simply to demonstrate that one link building strategy may present an edge over others or may pose more risks than the alternatives. Hopefully, this would be a starting point for you in choosing a suitable link building strategy for your particular kind of website.
