We are the law firm of COLLINS, HANNAFIN, GARAMELLA, JABER & TUOZZOLO, P.C., a group of dedicated professionals operating as a team to provide you with full service in all areas of law. Each of our attorneys practices only in limited areas so that his or her skills and knowledge are maximized for you, the client. At the same time, our firm emphasizes coordination and cooperation between firm members in order to best serve all of your needs. This team concept is an extraordinarily effective way of servicing your needs, particularly in complex legal matters. Our firm is divided into five substantive areas:. Litigation;. Commercial and Residential Real Estate Transactions and Land Use;. General Corporate and Commercial Law;. Business and Individual Tax Planning; and. Wills, Trusts, and Probate. Our Litigation Department is one of the largest in the Danbury area, representing clients in matters involving personal injury, commercial disputes, managed care issues, family law, criminal defense, employment, workers' compensation, labor relations, appeals to the State Supreme and Appellate Courts, and general civil litigation. Our Real Estate/Land Use group, in addition to handling commercial and residential real estate transactions, specializes in planning, zoning, inland-wetlands, subdivisions, site plans, variance applications, and appeals. Our Land Use attorneys regularly represent our clients before the numerous land use boards and commissions in the greater Danbury area. Additionally, we represent several municipalities in planning and zoning and inland-wetlands matters. Our General Corporate and Commercial Law personnel handle matters including business incorporation, limited liability companies, banking, commercial and corporate contracts, compensation agreements, transactional health care law, and securities filings. Our Business and Individual Tax Planning Group offers legal advice to commercial, corporate and individual clients. Our business clents receive expert advice concerning corporate and partnership formation; corporate shareholder and employment agreements; stock options; deferred compensations; purchases, sales, mergers and aquisitions, and dissolutions; pensions; and all business tax matters. Our service to individual clients includes family limited partnerships; planning for the closely-held business; retirement, Title XIX planning as well as planning for the elderly; and all other individual tax matters. Our Estate Planning personnel handle wills and trusts preparation, probate and estate administration, and probate appeals. In addition, this department serves clients who need estate and Title XIX planning as well as planning for the elderly. Firm members practice in both State and federal courts and appear regularly before State and local agencies. "Both the client and the attorney derive benefit from a relationship based upon mutual trust, understanding, and communication.". We believe that a strength of Collins, Hannafin is in balancing specialization of individual attorneys with coordination of specialized groups within the firm. As our client, you, therefore, have the benefit of the collective knowledge of firm members on each matter, although you may only interact with a specialist in the appropriate area. Each of our departments is headed by a member with more than twenty-five years experience in practicing law. Each department member handles matters of varying degrees of complexity within his or her specialty area. Our attorneys meet both informally as well as on a scheduled basis to consult with each other on legal matters. This affords you the opportunity for the best value and service for a particular matter because of this intra-departmental communication and cooperation. The diversity of our firm members' educations, professional interests, ethnicity, and activities is representative of the broad range of services that we offer you. Most of our attorneys are involved with civic organizations where they lend their legal expertise for the betterment of our community. Several of the our attorneys volunteer their time to assist the Judicial Department of the State of Connecticut as referees, mediators, and special masters in trial matters, on the Grievance Committee, which is a watchdog of the legal profession, and on the Connecticut Statewide Committee for selecting judges. A number of attorneys teach, or have taught, at the local university and most members have published scholarly articles for the legal profession. We encourage our members to perform Pro Bono services for those in need and our attorneys have performed thousands of hours of Pro Bono service. "Keeping up with changes in the law is vital in today's complex legal system. The success of the services we provide to our clients depends on it.". We are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. You are the direct beneficiary of this pervasive attitude and dedication. As the law constantly changes, each attorney participates in an ongoing learning process. All attorneys attend frequent seminars to expand their substantive knowledge in their particular areas of specialty as well as to hone their skills in writing and oral persuasion. In-house discussion of cases is routine, thus sharing experience with all members. All litigators belong to the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association and all attorneys are members of the State and local bar associations. Our firm has evolved substantially since our inception in 1963 as Cutsumpas & Collins with a small office on West Street in Danbury. Ed Hannafin joined us in 1968 when we took the name of Cutsumpas, Collins & Hannafin, which we held for almost 20 years. Jack Garamella joined us in 1977 to begin our litigation section. The firm of Jaber & Tuozzolo merged with us to round out our Business, Real Estate, and Land Use Groups. Tom Beecher, who began his career with us, became a principal in 1990. Bob Opotzner, with 15 years' experience, joined us as a principal, also in 1990. Eva DeFranco and Chris Leonard, who also began their careers with us, became principals in 1993 and 1996 respectively. When Lloyd Cutsumpas became a Superior Court Judge in early 1998, the firm became Collins, Hannafin, Garamella, Jaber, & Tuozzolo, P.C., which it remains today. In the fall of 1998, E. O'Malley Smith became a principal of the firm. Most recently, Gregg Brauneisen became a principle, and Laura Goldstein, who began her career with us in 1994, became a principal in 2002. The associate members of our firm all have excellent academic backgrounds and add further energy and enthusiasm to the team we offer you. All our attorneys are products of highly regarded state and private schools. Collins, Hannafin is dedicated to serving your needs with state-of-the-art knowledge of legal issues, an interdisciplinary approach to client problems, and a creative approach to legal issues combined with the warmth and personal touch which has always been the hallmark of our service. For the convenience of our growing client base, we opened an office in Ridgefield in 1997. Bob Opotzner, Chris Leonard, and Gail Matthews are most frequently in residence, although other members of the firm also have office hours in Ridgefield. We have received an AV rating* under Martindale Hubbell's peer review rating system. *CV, BV, and AV are registered certification marks of Reed Elsevier Properties Inc., used in accordance with the Martindale-Hubbell certification procedures, standards, and policies. Martindale-Hubbell is the facilitator of a peer review rating process. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of members of the Bar and the judiciary.
