Thriller Video

Where were you when you first heard 'Thriller'?I was about 9 years old when I saved my money and asked my dad to drive me to Tower Records to buy Michael Jackson's Thriller tape.

I remember going home, putting on a jean skirt and my mother's sunglasses, and blaring the music on my parent's boom box.

I danced around the house as if I were a Solid Gold dancer even though I was far from it.

I also remember watching MTV for hours waiting to see the Thriller video.

My parents typically went out to dinner on Friday and Saturday nights and hired a neighborhood teenager to care for me.

The babysitter and I would watch video after video waiting to see Jackson transform into a zombie.

And then there was the period when I tried to learn the moon walk and the time I took one of my mom's white leather gloves and wore it around.

Jackson emerged as the king of pop just as my awareness of music began to develop.

He might have been the first musician I idolized, before moving onto Duran Duran.

The media has been hard on Jackson over the past several years.

He has become better known for his quirks and unusual ways.

I have certainly snickered and cringed at some of the things I've heard and read.

But now that he has passed away suddenly its those childhood memories, those days of shaking my hips with a group of girlfriends to "Billy Jean," that come to mind.
