Twin robots in the new Transformers film has sent tongues wagging with "Skids" and "Mudflap" playing two illiterate, gold-toothed inarticulate jive-talking bots. For starters, the twin bots disguised as compact Chevys, constantly argue and and spew rap derived street slang.

In one scene, one of the ghetto bots is forced to admit that he doesn't know how to read. While Skids and Mudflap were supposed to be the comedic relief in the film, it did quite the opposite and perpetuated negative African American stereotypes.

Manohla Dargis, film critic for The New York Times, takes it a step further, writing that the "Transformers" characters were given "conspicuously cartoonish, so-called black voices that indicate that minstrelsy remains as much in fashion in Hollywood as when, well, Jar Jar Binks was set loose by George Lucas."Director Michael Bay firmly denies the 'bots where inspired by "ghetto" culture."We're just putting more personality in," Bay said.

"I don't know if it's stereotypes _ they are robots, by the way.

These are the voice actors.

This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it."
