Sirius Satellite Radio Show DJ Howard Stern has been busy working on a remake of the cult teen comedy film Porky’s. After a week off from his radio show last week, Stern has announced that the film is “ready to go.â€
“They say it’s all greenlit and everything, ready to go. They say they can even start shooting in October, but I don’t know if that’s true. It seemed like a fun project, which it is.â€
In 2002, it was announced that Howard Stern was going to launch a series of movies which would carry the “Howard Stern Presents†logo. These movies were going to start with remakes of both Porky’s and Rock ‘N’ Roll High School. Filming on Porky’s was meant to start filming in the summer of 2003, but the project went into a serious lull in development and people started to believe that the project was no more.
Stern insists this wasn’t the case,
“We got two scripts that were developed simultaneously kind of. One’s a rewrite of a rewrite of a script that we did - that I didn’t do, but I was sort of in on. It’s coming along pretty funny,†said Stern. “We’re going to combo them now because there’s funny jokes in both and you have to figure out which is better for the movie. And I obsess on shit too because you want it to be good.â€
We don’t know who is writing the script although in 2005 it was reported that there were 8 drafts, the number must have risen by now!
Films like SuperBad and American Pie have given R-Rated teen comedies a new lease of life and it is argues that Porky’s was the original in this genre. It would be good to see the original come back and, if done well, show the other films how it’s done. The original 1982 film was directed by the late Bob Clark and followed the escapades of a group of teenagers at the fictional Angel Beach High School in Florida in 1954.
