To help put the history of the McMansion phenomenon in perspective: in 1950 the average desired size of the American dream home was estimated at 983 square feet; by 2004 this figure had skyrocketed to 2,349 square feet. This figure, which historically has continually risen each year, is now expected to drop for the first time in 60 years. In a recent poll, it was estimated that only 9 percent of Americans desire to occupy a McMansion (where a McMansion represents a house that is 3000 square feet or larger). The vast majority of those polled (roughly 64 percent) desired a much more modest dream home between 800 and 2000 square feet. ...
