His bizarre lifestyle, which included owning a pet chimp called Bubbles, a fascination with toys and an unexplained physical transformation which saw his skin lighten and his features hugely change, caused fascination among fans and non-fans alike.Eyebrows were raised when the self-styled Peter Pan of pop bought his famous Neverland ranch in California in 1987.

The pop mega star transformed it into a child-like fantasy park, complete with a zoo, Ferris wheel, roller-coaster and video arcade games.But curiosity turned to suspicion in 1993 when a 13-year-old boy, Jordan Chandler, accused him of child molestation at the site.Although he constantly denied having done anything wrong, the star reportedly settled out of court with the boy for £11million.In 2002, he caused further public outcry by dangling his baby - referred to as Â"Blanket” - out of a third-floor hotel balcony in Germany in front of stunned passers-by.He later said he regretted the incident but was condemned by many across the world.

The following year his comments on the Living with Michael Jackson documentary with journalist Martin Bashir caused huge alarm when he admitted sharing a bedroom with a child, claiming it was a Â"charming” experience.

A warrant was later issued for his arrest on charges of sexually molesting 12-year-old Gavin Arvizo and Jackson gave himself up to police amid a media frenzy.In a trial that had the world hooked he pleaded not guilty to all allegations, saying that the sleepovers were in no way sexual in nature.

Jackson was eventually acquitted of all charges.

He married Elvis PresleyÂ's daughter Lisa Marie Presley, in 1994, to the surprise of many.

Their marriage collapsed after 19 months and Lisa Marie later said it had been a sham.His second marriage, to nurse Debbie Rowe in 1996, was also short-lived.

Miss Rowe gave birth to two children, who Jackson claimed were his - something which some others have always disputed.He named the children after himself Prince Michael Jackson and Paris Michael Katherine.

After the break-up of their marriage in 1999, the singer said that Miss Rowe had given him custody of the children as a present.His third child, Prince Michael II, was born to a mystery surrogate mother he never even met.As well as his many personal problems, Jackson has been plagued by a various health issues throughout his life.

He claimed the changing colour of skin, which had always attracted widespread speculation, was down to him being diagnosed with vitiligo and lupus.He said both illnesses made him sensitive to sunlight and that the treatment for them made his skin lighter.

But critics accused him of using skin-lightening creams.He has also been consistently accused of having plastic surgery.
