Evidence is gathered, but the singer agrees to pay an undisclosed sum to settle the case before it goes to court.

Estimates of the figure range anywhere from two million dollars (£1.1 million) to 50 million dollars (£27.8 million).

May 1994 â€" Jackson marries Lisa Marie Presley â€" daughter of Elvis.

The union lasted 19 months.

What's wrong with sharing a love?" February 12 â€" Jackson retaliates to what he sees as the documentary's unfair portrayal by releasing a video taken behind the scenes by his own cameramen.

In it Bashir says the singer is such a "spectacular" father it almost makes him cry.

November â€" More than 70 officers descend on Jackson's Neverland ranch hunting for evidence that he had sex with 13-year-old cancer sufferer Gavin Arvizo.

The singer returns to California after shooting a music video in Las Vegas and is arrested on suspicion of committing "lewd or lascivious acts" with a child under 14.

He provides a 3 million-dollar (£1.7 million) surety for bail.

December â€" Tom Sneddon, the district attorney in Santa Barbara, announces that Jackson has been charged with seven accounts of child molestation and two counts of administering an intoxicating alcohol to a child for the purpose of committing a felony.

2004January â€" The singer â€" who has already called the allegations against him a "big lie" â€" formally enters not guilty pleas at a court in Santa Maria.

Judge Rodney Melville rebukes him for turning up 20 minutes late to the hearing, but Jackson still thrills fans by dancing on top of a van afterwards.

April â€" A Santa Barbara grand jury decides Jackson should stand trial.

He once again enters not guilty pleas to the original charges, and one additional count of conspiracy to abduct a child, at court in Santa Maria.

September â€" Further allegations surface that Jackson paid over £1 million to another young boy who claimed he was molested in 1993.

A series of leaks purport to reveal details of the prosecution and defence case.

2005January 31 â€" Jury selection begins in Santa Maria.

February 15 â€" Jackson is rushed to hospital suffering from flu, and the trial is put back for a week while he receives treatment.

The process has already been delayed by the death of defence lawyer Thomas Mesereau's sister.

February 22 â€" Jury selection resumes.

February 28 â€" Trial finally gets under way.

Opening the prosecution case, Mr Sneddon says Jackson "manipulated and exploited" Arvizo.

May 11 â€" Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin provides one of the highlights of the trial, rejecting any suggestion he was molested by Jackson.

May 24 â€" Comedian Jay Leno, another celebrity witness called by the defence, tells the jury he was suspicious of the singer's accuser when they spoke on the phone.

But in a setback for the defence he said the family of Gavin Arvizo had never asked him for money.

May 25 â€" Rush Hour star Chris Tucker, the last of 50 defence witnesses, tells the court he found Gavin Arvizo to be unusually sophisticated and cunning for his age and said he grew suspicious of the Arvizo family when they went to the set of a film he was shooting in Las Vegas and refused to leave.

June 3 â€" Jurors start considering their verdicts.

June 13 â€" Jackson cleared of all charges.
