Homers carry USA past Canada in World Cup of Softball Comments 0 Published: July 18, 2009Homers carry USA past CanadaAdvertisementBy Scott WrightStaff [email protected] USA rookie Jenae Leles continued her home run streak, and a couple others joined in the action Saturday as the Americans blasted Canada 15-0 in the World Cup of Softball at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The four-inning run-rule victory made unbeaten Team USA the first team to win three games at the World Cup and the only unbeaten team remaining.

It also moved the Americans one win away from clinching a spot in Monday night's championship game.Leles has homered in all three games, hitting a three-run shot Saturday.

For the World Cup, she is 7-for-8 with three home runs and 11 runs batted in.Natasha Watley had a grand slam and Andrea Duran hit three-run homer to back Monica Abbott's two-hitter.

"When your offense comes out and puts that many runs on the board is awesome," said Abbott, who made her first appearance in this World Cup.

"I just wanted to get us back in the dugout as soon as possible so we could take advantage of our offense."Watley, typically a slap-hitter to take advantage of her speed from the leadoff spot, showed she has some power in reserve if needed."The situation called for me to hit for power, coming up with runners in scoring position," she said.

"Fortunately I got a good piece of it."Team USA will be back in action Saturday night at 7 against Japan in a rematch of the 2008 Olympic gold-medal game, which Japan won 3-1 in Beijing last summer. With softball's Olympic future in peril, the rematch will be the ultimate showcase for the sport on the international level."This is just another way for us to expose our sport," Watley said.

"We want to expose our sport, give the fans great competition and a great game."There's a great rivalry between us and Japan, so hopefully that can get more people excited about softball."Related Topics: Sports, BaseballShare with a friend Your Email address:Enter multiple comma-separated email recipients.cancelok Friends Email address many: Message:
