Associated Press - July 24, 2009 12:35 PM ET LINCOLN, Neb.

(AP) - There's never been a reported sighting of a whooping crane near McCook, but worries that construction might disturb the endangered bird may be one reason road work is being delayed in the area. The Red Willow County road supervisor said it's an example of the red tape holding up road work and it comes at a time when projects are supposed to move quickly to jolt the economy.County Roads' Supervisor Gary Dicenta said that in December, the county sent paperwork to the state to get approval for two road projects outside McCook. Not until a week ago did the county get a reply indicating projects would have to proceed with caution to not disturb whooping cranes.

Now the county has to provide more paperwork regarding environmental issues. On the Net:Red Willow County: 2009 The Associated Press.
