The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is recommending that people stay out of the Verdigris River and Rock Creek southeast of Independence because of raw sewage.
A news release from the department said the city's two main sewage pump stations were damaged by the recent flooding and have been bypassing raw sewage downstream. Repairs are under way.
Officials say downstream public drinking water systems on the Verdigris should be unaffected. Anyone who comes into contact with river water should wash there mouths out with soap and water.
Rock Creek, the news release said, is more heavily affected and bodily contact with the stream should be avoided. The department recommends that pets and livestock be prevented from entering or drinking from Rock Creek.
