MILWAUKEE -- Could it be possible that the United States is actually maturing into a power in men's soccer? Just a few days ago, the U.S.

squad was on the verge of being eliminated from the eight-nation Confederations Cup tournament after losing its first two games. In order to advance to the semifinals, the Americans needed to beat Egypt by three goals, and they needed Brazil to defeat Italy by three goals.

That would be like the Packers needing to win their final game by at least 40 points, and then have the Vikings lose their final game by at least 40 points in order for Green Bay to make the playoffs.Lo and behold, the U.S.

won by three goals, and so did Brazil, so the Americans advanced to face top-ranked Spain, winners of 15 straight matches, in the semifinals.Final score: United States 2, Spain 0.

The upstart Americans post one of the biggest wins in U.S.

soccer history, and now they move onto the finals against either Brazil or South Africa. The warmup for the World Cup may turn out to be a springboard for U.S.

Then again, maybe it was a fluke.
