THE challenge of backing up from yesterday's 5km triumph to contest today's 10km event proved too great for Australia's newest world champion, Melissa Gorman at Ostia, near Rome.Gorman was with the leaders until the 6km mark but slid back through the pack soon afterwards and confirmed later that she had failed to recover from the previous day's heroics."That was the longest 10km of my life,'' the 24-year-old swimmer said after crossing the finish line in 29th place."I tried as well as I could to recover overnight but I was really hurting.

I woke up quite a few times during the night feeling sorer and sorer.

"I put Tiger Balm on my shoulders but it was still very sore this morning."The scheduling change in the open water events, forced by a fierce storm last weekend, eliminated the day's break between events that the 5km and 10km swimmers expected.Olympic champion Larissa Ilchenko, of Russia, who had finished second to Gorman in a photo-finish in the 5km race, failed to finish the 10km, withdrawing about half-way.The eventual winner, Briton Keri-Anne Payne, had not contested the 5km event.

Payne led from start to finish, winning in 2hr, 1min, 37.1sec, from Russia's Ekatarina Seliverstova (2:01.38) and Italy's Martina Grimaldi (2:01.38.6).Australia's second competitor, 17-year-old Danielle de Francesco, was contesting her first senior international 10km race and the schoolgirl received a lesson in the rough-and-tumble of the event.

She finished 36th."It was the most difficult race I have ever done,'' she said."I couldn't believe how rough it was and, on the last lap, the speed they had."Gorman now joins the pool team as she is scheduled to race the 800m and 1500m freestyle at the Foro Italico next week.

She said she would do her best to recover from the gruelling open water schedule.
