Director Robert Rodriguez, who seemingly transitions effortlessly from gory horror movies ("Planet Terror," "From Dusk til Dawn") to fun, family flicks ("Shark Boy and Lava Girl," "Spy Kids") stopped by Comic-Con Friday to show a preview of his new kid-safe movie, "Shorts," to and answer questions."Shorts," like "Shark Boy" before it, is billed as a "Rodriguez Family Production," and it is no fluffy marketing ploy to suck in moms and pops with 2.3 kids.

Rodriguez's three children, Rocket, Racer and Rebel, all participate in the movies, whether it is acting or providing ideas during the creative process.Rodriguez said Rebel came up with the idea for "Shorts" after watching the Little Rascals.

The new film, due out in August, is a series of vignettes about a group of children who have fantastical adventures surrounding a rainbow wishing rock.

The segments are out of order but in the end form a complete story.

"It's a 'Pulp Fiction' for kids," Rodriguez said with a laugh.Rodriguez, like his children, started young in filmmaking, creating movies in his back yard with his father's VHS recorder at age 10.

Unlike Rodriguez, though, his kids have a father who can help them realize their ideas.

He said that they also gave him characters for the "Shark Boy" and "Spy Kids" movies.

Rodriguez believes it's important to have his family around for inspiration, and films and produces a great deal on his own ranch in Texas.

"I was working with a studio before and I brought my kids to work one day," Rodriguez said.

"A producer said it wasn't professional to have children there, so I went out and started my own, Troublemaker Studios."
