By JAMES VERNIERE Tonight at 8, Turner Movie Classics remembers World War I with Howard Hawks' classic "Sergeant York," featuring an Oscar-winning turn by Gary Cooper in the title role.

A 1941 release, the film tells the rousing story of real-life backwoodsman and Medal of Honor recipient York, a pacifist-turned-war-hero.

The stellar cast includes Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie, Ward Bond, June Lockhart and Margaret Wycherly as York's mother.

This Warner Bros.

release notably boosted the morale of a nation on the brink of another war.

One of the "York" screenwriters was John Huston, whose directing debut, "The Maltese Falcon," opened in the same year.

"York" is a Memorial Day must-see.
