Investigators said during a news conference today in Chula Vista that Rosas was outside of�his vehicle when he was killed within "close proximity" to the border fence.

The three-year veteran of the Border Patrol was married and had an 11-month-old daughter and 2-year-old son, according to the law enforcement website Officer Down Memorial Page.

Earlier today, investigators said there were signs of a struggle and some of Rosas' gear was stolen.

It was the first shooting death of a Border Patrol agent in about a decade.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our own," U.S.

Department of Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano said in a statement.

"Agent Robert Rosas was gunned down while protecting our nation's Southwest border.

"This act of violence will not stand — nor will any act of violence against the Border Patrol." She said the department's full resources would be used in the investigation.
