Rian Thal quickly made friends after moving into the new Piazza at Schmidts apartment complex in Northern Liberties.

But the party promoter and bar manager at Plush nightclub a few blocks away made some enemies too.

The attractive, bubbly 34-year-old who partied with professional athletes as a living also dabbled with a darker crowd that may have led to her demise, detectives said yesterday of Thal's murder Saturday evening just outside her apartment's front door.

Thal and a 35-year-old man, identified yesterday only as living outside of Philadelphia, were shot several times and died in the seventh-floor hallway of developer Bart Blatstein's acclaimed $150 million commune on Second Street near Girard Avenue.

Three gunmen fled after the shooting and remain at large.

Detectives later found "a large quantity of drugs and money" inside Thal's apartment and believe it likely had something to do with the shooting.

"They were ambushed in the hallway.

Three gunmen converged on her and her friend from both sides of the elevator," homicide Lt.

Philip Riehl said.

Taalib-Bin Franks, a music promoter, met Thal when she worked at Ms.

Tootsies on South Street and described her as "real good friends with a lot of athletes." "She had this scratchy voice you couldn't forget," he said.

Another resident who knew Thal said the incident did not surprise him.

"This was a lifestyle thing, not a location thing," said Dave, who declined to give his last name.

He said he often saw Thal going in and out of the building with men who weren't "the nicest bunch of guys." Brian X.
