or without himThe Boston Red Sox traded for Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Adam LaRoche on Wednesday, a sign that the Sox are feeling some immediate heat from the red-hot Yankees, who surged into first place on Tuesday night. The Pirates - once again playing farm club to the big-dollar boys of the AL East - will receive a pair of minor leaguers, right-hander Hunter Strickland and shortstop Argenis Diza, from the Red Sox in exchange for LaRoche. The 29-year-old LaRoche is hitting just .247, but with 12 home runs and 40 RBI on the season, the 6-3 slugger figures to bring some needed pop to the Red Sox lineup. The Red Sox still appear to be major players in the Roy Halladay sweepstakes, but by dealing for LaRoche, the team demonstrated its need for an offensive boost after hitting just .236 since June 17 and scoring a meager 12 runs in five games since the All-Star break.

LaRoche hasn't been on fire of late, either, with just five hits in 46 at-bats (.109) and one RBI since July 4, including an 0-22 slide.

But LaRoche hit a career-high 32 homers with the Atlanta Braves in 2006, and clubbed 25 dingers and drove in 82 runs a season ago. The cash-strapped Pirates, who have traded five starting position players since last July, once again gets promising prospects and the opportunity to dump a veteran contract for their part in supplying the annual AL East arms race.Strickland is 5-4 with a 3.35 ERA in 18 games in Class A Greenville, with just 13 walks in 81 1/3 innings.

Diaz is a 22-year-old shortstop renowned for his defensive skills, hitting .253 in Double-A Portland, Maine. The Red Sox raided the Pirates just last year when they acquired outfielder Jason Bay from Pittsburgh in the deal that sent Manny Ramirez to Los Angeles.

While the Pirates remain a last-place club, Bay, tied for second in the AL with 72 RBI heading into Wednesday's play, has been a hit for the Red Sox.Ads by Yahoo!EmailPrintRssShareDiggStumbleUponFacebookSee all share links >>Del.icio.usMixxRedditPropellerNewsvineFurl
