When the ratings come out Monday, ABC's coverage of the British Open final round should be satisfying.

Fortunately for the viewers who started their TV watching early today to see if Tom Watson could make history, the network for the most part was equal to the task. With no high-definition picture, the ball wasn't always easy to see, but the announcers — particularly course reporters Andy North and Judy Rankin — did a good job of letting viewers know whether the shots were good or bad before the ball landed.Mike Tirico, as usual, was a master traffic cop, directing a phethora of announcers through the final round coverage. If there was a shortcoming, it was that there were too many voices.

Paul Azinger was alongside Tirico at 18th, but ABC also used hole reporters.

Add that to the course reporters and the viewer wasn't sure who was talking. There also was some subtle rooting for Watson, the 59-year-old who lost in a playoff to Stewart Cink, but most of the audience was doing the same thing.

That's why the rating number likely will be strong.
