The defense arm of Oshkosh Corporation was awarded a contract worth more than a billion dollars to build all-terrain vehicles for the military.The Department of Defense announced the contract Tuesday afternoon.The U.S.

Army is overseeing the purchase of 2,244 mine-resistant, ambush-protected ATVs along with parts and support.

The deal is worth $1,055,910,053.The MRAP ATV, or M-ATV, was requested last year by the Army Tank Automotive Command to improve maneuverability in areas with rougher terrain and no established roads, such as Afghanistan.Oshkosh Corporation chair Bob Bohn told Action 2 News the contract will result in "significant hiring," but that is still in the planning stages.In an earlier prepared statement, Bohn said, "Due to the urgent need of our Armed Forces for a survivable and highly mobile vehicle, our corporation's number one priority is meeting the Department's accelerated delivery schedule of the Oshkosh M-ATV."Oshkosh Corporation will put whatever resources are necessary to meet or exceed the government's delivery schedule," including discussions with other manufacturers, Bohn said.Executive vice president Andy Hove said daily manufacturing actually began a few weeks ago in anticipation of winning the contract, to get a jumpstart on the intense schedule and begin delivering M-ATVs in July.Oshkosh Corporation stock was up almost 22% after close on Tuesday, up 3.19 points to 17.73 a share.
