Paul Pioneer Press laid off nine employees in its newsroom Tuesday and two in advertising and sales production, according to news reports. The layoffs are estimated to save the Pioneer Press about $800,000 a year, according to a report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

MinnPost blogger David Bauer also reported the news, citing a Facebook entry by former Pioneer Press copy editor Andrew Pritchard, who said he was one of the ones cut.Cheryl Burch-Schoff, a Pioneer Press newsroom delegate to the Newspaper Guild labor union, declined to comment. The cuts will trim down the Pioneer Press' current 131-member newsroom and the 74-employee advertising staff.

The paper laid off about a dozen workers earlier this year, citing the weak economy.
