The mother found the toddler in his cot on Sunday, January 29, 2006with a brown substance around his mouth and vomit on his bedsheets. An autopsy revealed he had died from high levels of morphine and methadone administered to him shortly before his death. The boy's mother and her boyfriend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were both former heroin addicts, and police found a "large number" of methadone bottles scattered around their home, Detective Senior Constable David Redgwell told Westmead Coroner's Court.A number of used syringes were also found, he said. The boy had himself been on a methadone program because his mother was using drugs at the time of his birth.Deputy State Coroner Carl Milovanovich was told the mother had begged her neighbour for his used methadone bottles so she could "lick them out" to help her deal with her children, who were "a handful".The woman has two other children, who are both now in protective care. The neighbour told police she had "gone off the rails" when her old boyfriend showed up and started living with her, Det Snr Const Redgwell said. That was also when the boy was first seen with bruises on him, he told the court. The neighbour had told police the boy's injuries only started to appear when the boyfriend was in the home, Det Snr Const Redgwell said. The drugs found in the boy's system were "strikingly similar" to the substances found in the boyfriend's urine sample taken the same day as the toddler's death, he said. The inquest is continuing.
