EnlargeOne of the highlights of summer TV viewing is USA's "In Plain Sight." The show about a U.S.

Marshal shepherding folks through the Witness Protection Program in New Mexico debuted last summer as a capable and coherent summer diversion.

Since then, the show, which stars Mary McCormack as U.S.

Marshal Mary Shannon, has evolved into something more.

It deftly mixes light-hearted high jinks (watching tough cops swoon over a new electric stapler earlier this season had me in stitches) with more soulful seriousness (Mary's struggle to come to terms with her mysterious, absentee father).

It's just that kind of complexity, McCormack says, that makes Mary so much fun to play."It's a great part," McCormack says.

She relishes how fun it is to play someone who is tough, funny and independent, while at the same time "you see that all that strength is a cover for injury or vulnerability.

That's what makes her real."The actress daughter of St.

James resident Bill McCormack, answered questions and signed autographs for a crowd of about 100 people during a two-hour reception Saturday at the St.

James Members Club Ballroom in the Brunswick County town. The most popular question from the crowd? When would Dad appear in an episode? As his daughter describes him, the amiable and outgoing Mr.

McCormack certainly fits the network's 'Characters Welcome' mantra."He's a hambone,' the actress said.

'He's like the chairman.

He's the mayor.

He's always like that.

When we have family reunions, he's the emcee.

He will not give the mic to anyone."McCormack's husband, "Brothers & Sisters" producer Michael Morris, joined her at the reception. The couple have two young girls, which McCormack says made family time a complicated juggling act, as her husband often jumped on a plane on weekends to travel from Los Angeles, where his show films, to the "Sight" set in Albuquerque.During one of those trips, he found time to direct the first half of "Sight's" second season finale."It was the first time we ever worked together," McCormack said.

"He was perfect and great as I knew he would be." Still, it was hard to not slip into some spousal familiarity.

"With most directors I try to be polite...

(But) one thing I noticed about my behavior was that I was a little more abrupt with Michael."Maybe that was just a bit of her on-screen persona rubbing off on her.

Mary (the character) isn't known for being a people person.

Pleasantries and small talk aren't part of her arsenal.

Still, Mary (the actress) wouldn't have it any other way."I dig Mary," she says.

"I want to go drinking with Mary.

I like her.

I don't see all the negative stuff.

I can't."McCormack offered these insights about what to expect this season on "In Plain Sight":More mama drama: Mary will continue to doubt her mom's (Lesley Ann Warren) new sobriety.

"I think this season is interesting when my mom sobers up, (but) for Mary, she's waiting for the other shoe to drop," McCormack says.A relationship milestone: Could a diamond ring be in the picture for Mary and her patient boyfriend, Raphael (Christian de la Fuente)? "He asks me a big question," teases McCormack.A continuing mix of heart, humor and soul: "Tonally our show shoots for lot," McCormack says, "because we try to be really funny, we try to be action-y and at the end we try to move you...

That's a lot to aim for in a show.

And when we get it right, it soars."Permalink: URL: | Add Your Comment
