Smith's Food and Drug Stores is expanding a recall of beef packed by JBS Swift Beef Co.

that might be contaminated with the E.

coli O157:H7 bacterium.

The recall was broadened to include packages weighing 2 pounds or more of store-brand labeled beef grind 85/15 with sell-by dates of April 27, 2009, to June 1, 2009.

Because the product is no longer in stores, Smith's is asking customers to carefully check their freezers at home for the ground beef described above with the following UPC codes on the label -- 0021165400000, 0021165410000, 0021165420000 and 0021165430000.

The items include beef products in foam tray packages wrapped in clear cellophane and purchased at Smith's in-store fresh meat cases.

Customers who have any of the beef items should not consume them and return them to a store for a full refund or replacement.

To date, no illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the beef products, which were packed at Swift's plant in Greeley, Colo.

Swift also operates a plant in Hyrum.

On June 25, Smith's asked customers to check freezers for beef products with sell-by dates from May 5 to May 24, 2009 -- Ball Tip Steak, Petite Cut; Lean 85/15 Ground Beef ST; Ground Beef (Not to Exceed 15% Fat); Cube Steak; Beef for Stew; Beef for Fondue; Beef Fajita Meat; and Beef for Stir Fry.

Those boxes bore "EST.

969" and packaging date codes of 042109 or 042209.

They have case codes of 21852, 21853, 31852, 31853, 33852, 33853, Advertisement41853, 41853, 79852, 79853 or 90853.

E.

coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure.

The very young, elderly and people with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to food-borne illness.
