NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Intuitive Surgical Inc.'s (ISRG) second-quarter net income rose 22% on strong sales of its surgical robots, despite economic headwinds hitting spending at hospitals that buy the systems.

But the Sunnyvale, Calif., company that makes "da Vinci" systems, most commonly used by surgeons for prostate-removal surgery, warned that continued pressure on hospital spending continued to make its sales outlook unclear.

While the cutting-edge systems are popular, their roughly $1.4 million price tag has slowed their sales at capital-constrained hospitals.
