Not what it's quacked up to be!Why did they make this picture? I was dragged unwillingly into watching this train wreck of a motion picture back in 1986. Having read the scathing reviews, I was hesitant, but overruled. Would this pick be as bad as feared?Unfortunately, yes. In the movie, a young duck named Howard (voiced by Chip Zien from the Into the Woods play) lives on a distant duck-ruled planet where ducks are like people. One evening, he is just sitting down to watch television when he is caught in some mad scientists' time vortex and arrives on the streets of Cleveland, Ohio. Sounds good so far?Lonely and afraid, he gradually meets up with a young singer named Beverly (played by Lea Thompson). They become friends and learn that Howard actually can go back to his home planet through the help of the scientist (Jeffrey Jones) who accidentally dragged him to Earth in the first place. There's just one catch. Murderous alien beasties have managed to find a way to get to Earth and promise to wreak havoc upon arrival. Howard and Beverly plot to stop them.Despite a promising opening and intriguing visuals from the duck planet,Howard the Duckturned out to be boring, loudand just unfunny. It even tried to make a pop 80's classic song from the title. This didn't work out too well.Amazingly enough, Howard the Duck now has somewhat of a cult following despite executive producer George Lucas' disdain for the film. Fans of Steve Gerber's comic strip were miffed by this release. They claim that it made the main character too cutesy and took away all the edge of the original character. See it for yourself and decide.
