Heath Ledger Tribute - an unfortunate loss to such a great a legend...

HEATH Ledger's film performances showed an actor unafraid to take risks and challenge himself with non-commercial roles.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) - Ledger came to international attention playing Julia Stiles' bad-boy love interest in this remake of the classic Shakespeare play "The Taming of the Shrew.', set in a modern-day high school.

Two Hands (1999) - Ledger won plaudits for his role as Jimmy in this successful Australian gangster film with Rose Byrne and Bryan Brown.

The Patriot (2000) - A breakthrough role as Mel Gibson's son in Roland Emmerich's blockbuster American civil war drama.

Monster's Ball - A supporting role as the son of a racist prison guard Hank Grotowski (Billy Bob Thornton) who falls in love with a black woman Leticia (Halle Berry).

A Knight's Tale (2001) - In this hit movie Ledger is a young squire who passes himself off as a knight to the strains of Queen's We Will Rock You.

The Four Feathers (2002) - Heath plays a British officer who resigns his post just before battle and subsequently receives four white feathers from his friends and fiancee as symbols of what they believe to be his cowardice.

Ned Kelly (2003) - Stars as Ned Kelly in this stylish version of the classic Australian bushranger tale.

Lord's Of Dogtown (2005) â€" Plays surf shop owner Skip, who in the mid-1970s, puts together a skate team of layabouts who become international stars. Loosely based on a true story.

Casanova (2005) - Ledger uses all his charm to play writer, adventurer, and infamous lover Giacomo Casanova in a rom com with no pretensions to historical realism.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) His most celebrated role in Ang Lee's masterpiece, the gay cowboy love story brought him best actor nominations at the Oscars and Golden Globes.

The Brothers Grimm (2005) - Does a passable job as Jake Grimm in this undercooked Terry Gilliam fantasy.

Candy (2006) - Plays young junkie Dan opposite Abbie Cornish's Candy in a story about love and addiction.

I'm Not There (2007) - His performance as the Robbie Clark incarnation of Bob Dylan - a divorcee, estranged from his wife Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg). Like the other actors in the film his performance was somewhat overshadowed by Cate Blanchett.

The Dark Knight (2008): The role he's destined to be remembered for is The Joker in the forthcoming Batman film. By all accounts he is masterful, taking influences from A Clockwork Orange and Sid Vicious to portray a disturbed and psychotic character. Playing the role reportedly took a heavy psychological toll on Ledger.
