Dede is an Indonesian fisherman who's body is covered in bark-like growths, giving him the appearance of being a half man half tree creature.

Dede is in fact entirely human, and fears that the growth which has already destroyed his job and marriage will take its final toll on his life.

The growths started appearing after Dede cut his knee as a teenager â€" the welts spread across his body until he was consumed by them.

Dr Anthony Gaspari from the University of Maryland concluded that the growths are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and that they could be treated with vitamin A.

When the Indonesian government heard of the American interest in their citizen they promptly took control of Dede and forced him to undergo painful and unsuccessful surgeries.

The Indonesian government promised to keep Dr.

Gaspari in the loop but he was forced to return home to the United States where he was often ignored by the Indonesian hospital that Dede was confined in.

Warts aside, he had enjoyed remarkable good health throughout his life - which would not be expected of someone with a suppressed immune system - and neither his parents nor his siblings have shown signs of developing lesions."The likelihood of having his deficiency is less than one in a million," reported Dr Gaspari.Dr Gaspari, who became involved in the case through a Discovery Channel documentary, believes that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been shown to arrest the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV."Half Man Half Tree", part of the "My Shocking Story" series, will be shown on the Discovery Channel at 9pm on Nov 15.
