He set a speed skating record in 1963, and won two silver medals at the World Championships in Japan.

He competed in the 1960, '64, and '68 Olympics.His former Olympic teammate, Floyd Bedbury, remembers how competitive he was."He had a good kick at the end of the race.

If you didn't watch him, he'd take you down," says Bedbury.

"He was a good sportsman, you know.

He'd never rub it in." Rudolph moved to Colorado Springs in the 1960s, where he made a name for himself as a developer and a philanthropist - side by side with his wife, Gwen."They gave freely of their time, their talent.

They were an inspiration to all, and once you met either one of them, you fell in love with them," says longtime friend Chuck Murphy.Murphy remembers the fishing trips, the vacations, and the favorite table at Phantom Canyon Brewery."They were there for you.

God, it's going to be tough.

It really is," says Murphy.Ed Rudolph volunteered to help build the Olympic Training Center, and was a champion of Olympic athletes.

He coached at the Broadmoor Speed Skating Club.

He also supported Goodwill Industries for 18 years, recently serving on the board.

The nonprofit agency gave him the Guiding Light Award in 2005.Ed and Gwen died Sunday afternoon, after a head-on collision in western Wyoming in Sublette County."We loved them, and we miss them, and as long as we have a memory, they'll be alive," says Murphy.Ed Rudolph was 68 years old.

Gwen Rudolph was 66 years old.
