~ Director, Veronica Herrera, B.A., has worked in the field of human services: Therapeutic Recreation /Care for over 16 years. Herrera loved her field so much, she went back to school at the age of 38 and earned her B.A. in Human Services, while working in a brain injury program, working with older adults with Alzheimer's disease, and with those with special needs. Herrera has spent her career learning and serving families with loved ones with special insights: psychosocial care, community, light exercise, cognitive exercises, therapeutic arts/crafts, pain management, depression management--and facilitating re defining meaning and purpose in life--after life altering experiences: grieving, illness, life adjustment, and more.
~ Veronica founded "Activities for Life" after her own life was changed dramatically after a car accident that left her with severe pain and weakness in her legs. Herrera says, " I had to learn how to live my life with the new circumstances--and see it as a challenge and not so much as a loss" (although she realized there were many losses with her spine injury, she learned to utlize her condition to serve the community in similar conditions. Herrera says, she "now felt that she understood her clients and had a deeper sense of empathy"
~ Herrera founded a vocational training in Grand Junction, for those wanting work in therapeutic Recreation. Classes are held twice yearly at Mosaic, Grand Junction. The Activity Assistant training provides students a certificate to work entry level in a therapeutic recreation program, etc.
~ Herrera has also been building an online/home study course for "Activity Assistants".
