Team USA, improving to 4-0, assured itself a spot in the World Cup of Softball championship game by beating Japan 6-1 Saturday night at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Team USA's offense, which seemed unstoppable after notching 33 runs in its first three games, sputtered at the start of the game.

The Americans failed to bring in runs from a pair of scoring opportunities in the second and third innings, leaving five runners stranded on base, but Osterman's pitching kept Japan out of scoring position.

In the bottom of the fourth, Ashley Charters laid a perfect bunt to allow Chelsea Bramlett to beat the ball to home plate for the first score of the game.

Japan responded immediately in the top of the fifth when Naoko Matsumoto came home to tie the game, and Japan put two runners on base with just one out in the inning.

A three-run homer from Satoko Mabuchi was prevented by a thrilling catch at the centerfield wall by Caitlin Lowe to keep the score tied.

In the bottom of the inning, Alissa Haber hit a solo homer to give Team USA a 2-1 lead.

A few batters later, with bolts of lightning erupting in the sky, third baseman Andrea Duran hit a two-run homer with bolts of lightning erupting in the distance.

The tarp came out on the field immediately afterward and the game was suspended for 50 minutes due to inclement weather conditions.

Team USA scored two more runs after play was resumed.

The Americans will play Australia (2-1) at noon today.

If they win, they'll be the top seed going into the championship game Monday at 8 p.m.
