MILWAUKEE - It was not a misprint Monday afternoon when Jerry Manuel penciled in the name Reyes for the leadoff spot on his lineup card.

Having run out of options, as well as ideas, it was more like wishful thinking.

Even though he plays shortstop and shares a surname, Argenis is no Jose.

"Just writing Reyes' name at the top means something, too, you know," Manuel said, smiling.

But the manager's psychological ploy was lost on the Mets, who are showing that the flimsy promise of getting their core players back isn't going to keep them in the playoff race.

Fernando Nieve flamed out after 31/3 innings, and Casey McGehee's grand slam alone outscored the Mets before an outburst in the ninth made it a more respectable 10-6 loss to the Brewers at Miller Park.

It was McGehee, the Brewers' rookie third baseman, whose dropped pop-up in the sixth led to two unearned runs for the Mets.

But with Milwaukee up 3-2, McGehee atoned for that error in the bottom of the inning with his first career grand slam, off Brian Stokes.,0,2873128.story
