TwitterFacebookShare Digg Reddit Facebook Twitter Newsvine FarkIt EmailPrintAAAFiled UnderNewsLocal NewsNEWARK -- Councilman Doug Marmie told Newark City Council's Finance Committee on Monday he is considering proposing legislation to bypass the Newark Sports and Events Commission to appropriate money to help keep the Babe Ruth League World Series in town.When council raised the bed tax in Newark from 1 percent to 3 percent earlier this year, it formed a memorandum of understanding with the Newark Sports and Events Commission to make recommendations to council about how the money will be spent.Council still has to approve any expenditures, however.With the legislation, the first $75,000 goes to the city of Newark this year, and the fund has $66,000.

Anything more than that $75,000 however, can be spent on local events.Marmie said the commission is not yet meeting on the topic, and he thinks it is important to set aside money for Babe Ruth
