On the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the first time man walked on the moon, the President said their mission was a "touchstone for excellence in exploration and discovery." Obama said that he remembered as a young boy in Hawaii watching the Apollo missions."I still recall sitting on my grandfather's shoulders when those capsules would land in the middle of the Pacific and they'd get brought back and we'd go out and we'd pretend like they could see us as we were waving at folks coming home. And I remember waving American flags and my grandfather telling me that the Apollo mission was an example of how Americans can do anything they put their minds to."Obama said that NASA has inspired a generation of scientists and engineers that sparked innovation and creatively on Earth as well.

"I think it's very important for us to constantly remember that NASA was not only about feeding our curiosity, that sense of wonder, but also had extraordinary practical applications. And one of the things that I've committed to doing as President is making sure that math and science are cool again, and that we once again keep the goal by 2020 of having the highest college graduation rates of any country on Earth, especially in the maths and science fields."Obama just lightly touched on his vision of NASA under the new administrator and former astronaut, Charles Bolden who was standing in the back of the room, along with deputy administrator Lori Garver."We are confident that they are going to be doing everything that they can in the decade to come to continue the inspirational mission of NASA."The President did not address the new missions of exploration that many, including the men in the room, have urged his administration to look at and invest in new missions.

At today's White House briefing with press secretary Robert Gibbs said that the administration is "committed" to human space exploration and that a committee has been set up through NASA to evaluate the costs and come back with recommendations for NASA policy going forward.

"The president looks forward to seeing those commission recommendations," Gibbs said, "And I have no doubt that the president will get an opportunity to listen to astronauts that walked on the moon 40 years ago, listen to their perspective and get a sense of what those missions did for scientific discovery and how that will impact the future."-Sunlen Miller July 20, 2009 in Obama, Barack | Permalink | Share | User Comments (18)User Comments You can follow this conversation by subscribing to the comment feed for this post.

"Let me guess, since Rush brought it up today suddenly birthers aren't so crazy.

Ever the dittohead."Dunno, did he? Are you a fan? Posted by: tjp612 | Jul 20, 2009 7:05:37 PM "but he why does he withhold other info as well (academic records, medical records, etc.).

This has not been an issue with prior presidents."Actually it has been.

When Bush's, Gore's and then Kerry's academic records were released via the press, the law has since been changed.

Which is why we did not see McCain's academic record or Palin's or Biden's or Obama's.All we found out is what schools they went to.

In terms of medical records, McCan made his voluminous medical records avail to a just a few members of the press who were allowed a very brief time to review them. Both Palin and Obama had their family doctor submit that they were in good health which was fine by me.

Nice to see the right wing spambots embrace the racist "he's an outsider" what's he hiding crap again.

Posted by: Ryan C | Jul 20, 2009 6:59:08 PM "The birth certificate he has provided appears a bit dubious and efforts to procure any additional info from the State of Hawaii have been rebuffed."Yes Freeper Polarik and "internet powerhouse" and anti semite Andy Martin.

Quite the the pair to follow.

Davd Weigel has been doing some work on the insanity of the freeper movement.

"Ironically, the 'birther' movement began in response to Obama's own efforts to debunk rumors.

One year ago this week, the presidential campaign of then-Sen.

Barack Obama launched FightTheSmears.com, a web site designed to push back against false rumors about the first African-American presidential nominee.

To push back against rumors that he was not born in Hawaii, the campaign reproduced a Certificate of Live Birth from the state's Health Department.

Instead of terminating the conspiracy theories, that inspired new theories — that the certificate had been forged or that even if it hadn't been forged it was the sort of certificate that could be given to someone born outside of the United States.

But the certificate is specific about Obama's birth in Honolulu, down to the 7:24 p.m.

time."It's crazy," said Janice Okubo, director of communications for the Hawaii Department of Health.

"I don't think anything is ever going to satisfy them."Okubo, who said that she gets weekly questions from Obama 'Birthers' that are "more like threats," explained that the certificate of live birth reproduced by Obama's campaign should have debunked the conspiracy theories.

"If you were born in Bali, for example," Okubo explained, "you could get a certificate from the state of Hawaii saying you were born in Bali.

You could not get a certificate saying you were born in Honolulu.

The state has to verify a fact like that for it to appear on the certificate.

But it's become very clear that it doesn't matter what I say.

The people who are questioning this bring up all these implausible scenarios.

What if the physician lied? What if the state lied? It's just become an urban legend at this point."Let me guess, since Rush brought it up today suddenly birthers aren't so crazy.

Ever the dittohead.

I see the right wing has really run out of crap to throw at Obama and are now relying on the birthers."Right....No, The One (unfortunately) gives us more material on an almost daily basis.

You did not answer the question: What is Obama hiding? The birth certificate he has provided appears a bit dubious and efforts to procure any additional info from the State of Hawaii have been rebuffed.

Again, I am not questioning his ability to hold the position of president, but what is Obama hiding? If it were just this issue (birth certificate) it would not be an issue at all, but he why does he withhold other info as well (academic records, medical records, etc.).

This has not been an issue with prior presidents.

Posted by: tjp612 | Jul 20, 2009 6:48:25 PM It seems all the spambots are hitting the theme of late.

==========Oh please.

Obama gave the Queen of England an iPod with all of his big speeches loaded onto it.

It's been a continual flow of fun for those on the Obama-self-reference watch.

Posted by: MayBee | Jul 20, 2009 6:38:21 PM You think the 40th anniversary of the moon landing is akin to the naming of a post office?I think it's a pretty incredible day, and Obama was lucky enough to share it with those 3 brave, dedicated men.

Call me a hater if you want, but I think the focus of Obama's press avail should have been to give each of those men a few words of individual praise.

No need for Obama to bring up his agenda at all, because it wasn't about him.

Posted by: MayBee | Jul 20, 2009 6:33:51 PM "2.) Obama as a narcissist is not a new meme by any stretch."True.

I should have said revived as it was popular during the campaign.

It seems all the spambots are hitting the theme of late.
