Five police officers gunned down in Bonnie and Clyde shootoutJul 17 2009 Ben Spencer A BONNIE and Clyde-style duo were shot dead after gunning down five police officers in two bloody battles.

Two of the officers were critical last night after being blasted by shotgun-wielding Hassan Shakur who was disguised as a priest, and his accomplice Amanda Peterson.

The pair were wanted for an armed robbery in Sleepy Hollow, Jersey, last month, which left one man in a coma after being shot.

The robbery was captured on CCTV and police identified the suspects, tracking them to a flat in Jersey City early yesterday.

Police chief Thomas Comey said of Shakur, 32: "This individual came fully ready to go to war with us.

This is not a normal shotgun, this is not a street weapon, this is one meant to hunt nothing other than men - and he took it out on our officers." The police chief revealed two cops had been sitting in a parked car, staking out the suspects.

At about 5am, a man dressed in a cloak that appeared to be priest's garb walked to them.

The officer on the passenger side jumped out to apprehend the suspect.

But concealed under the man's cloak was a pump-action shotgun and a strap of ammunition.

The suspect pivoted, threw off his cloak and unloaded two rounds.

Comey said: "As he realised we were on him, he shed an outer garment to make sure that he could pull the shotgun up so he could go to war almost instantly, go to battle." The shotgun blast missed the officer on foot, but the pellets grazed the leg of the driver.

The gunman then fled into the block of flats as the officers called for backup.

At least two residents remained inside when the second gun battle broke out an hour later.

Rich Pratt, 47, said he looked through the peephole and saw police officers in riot gear swinging a battering ram.

As he unlocked the door, police rushed in and told him to lie down in his bathtub with his dog.

Another resident, Greg Cefaratti, 55, said he heard police banging on the door next to his and a voice say: "Open the door, honey." He next heard "about 30" pistol shots in a sustained roar that lasted 15 seconds, punctuated by the occasional shotgun blast.

The first officer inside, Michael Camacho, 55, was struck in the neck.

Behind him, officer Marc DiNardo, 37, was shot in the face.

A furious exchange of bullets followed, and Shakur and Peterson, 22, were killed.

Paramedic Michael Saul, who treated Camacho, said: "That bullet must have been blessed with holy water because it missed all the big vessels." The bullet was lodged in between his jugular vein and carotid artery - a millimetre either way would have been fatal.

The officer shot in the face, DiNardo, also had a close call.

He had "no signs of life" when he was brought to the Jersey City Medical Centre, but last night, he was stable, though critical.

Other officers were released after treatment.'This shotgun was meant to hunt men - our officers'
