April 26, 2009 Former Oregon State safety Al Afalava has been drafted with the 17th pick in the 6th round (190 overall) by the Chicago Bears on Sunday in the 2009 National Football League Draft.

Afalava earned four letters while starting 36 games in his career.

The Laie, Hawai'i native earned All-Pac-10 honors twice in his career.

Known as one of the biggest hitters in the conference, Afalava regularly created big plays in his career including scoring touchdowns twice in his career - on an interception return against Utah in 2008 and on a fumble recovery at UCLA in 2007.

Afalava joins his former running mate Sabby Piscitelli, who was drafted in the second round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2007, from the Beavers' defensive backfield in the NFL.

Afalava joins Andy Levitre (2nd/51st), Keenan Lewis (3rd/96th), Victor Butler (4th/110th), Slade Norris (4th/126th) and Brandon Hughes (5th/148th) as Beaver alums taken in the 2009 draft, marking the most former Oregon State players taken in a single NFL Draft since 1967 when Bob Grim (2nd/Vikings), Rockne Freitas (3rd/Steelers), Scott Eaton (8th/Giants), Pete Pifer (11th/Giants), Paul Brothers (16th/Cowboys) and Wayne Valley, Jr.
